Have you ever needed to download many files from a single webpage, but found it too cumbersome (click, save as, click, save as, etc…)? This is commonly the case if you want to save all pictures in a gallery, or need to download an archive that has been split into multiple parts.

What you will need

1. Mozilla Firefox
2. downTHEMall! (a Mozilla Firefox extension)

How to use downTHEMall!

1. Navigate to the webpage with the content you want to download.
2. Right-click on the page and select downTHEMall! to open the extension.
3. Follow the on-screen directions. Basically, you need to select the desired links or images present in the page, decide where to save them, and click Start downloads! to process your selection.
4. Sit back and watch downTHEMall! do the hard work for you!

Sometimes it is useful to hide or deny access to drive letters in My Computer and the Windows Explorer. This is often desired if you have a swap partition or scratch partition that you do not want in the way, or when a multi card reader creates drive letters you simply will not be using. Or maybe you just have something to hide… :)

There are two ways to achieve this goal. The first method is easier and limited, while the second method is powerful and considerably more complicated.

Option 1 (Basic)
Recommended for users who are not comfortable with editing the Windows registry. Also recommended for users who would rather do it the easy way. ;)

This method only hides the drive letters from the current user, e.g., the user logged in when the changes are made. If you need to hide drive letters from all users of the system, or if “hiding” is not good enough and you need to deny access, please scroll down and read Option 2 instead.

What you will need

1. Administrator privileges
2. Tweak UI (distributed with the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP)

How to use Tweak UI

1. Login as an administrator.
2. Run Tweak UI.
3. Navigate to My Computer » Drives. Note: This step refers to Tweak UI, not Windows.
4. You should see a list of drive letters from A to Z on the right side. Uncheck any drive letters you do not want to see anymore. Note: You should not uncheck drive letters with a red question mark on them! These are not currently in use, and you should leave them checked so they will be available for any new hardware you plugin later.

If you did everything correctly, the drive letters you wanted to hide will no longer be listed in My Computer or the Windows Explorer. Programs and dialogs that internally use the Windows Explorer will also be affected.

You are typing a message in a forum, and your message reads: “But I already submitted a cancelation request!” While previewing your message, you wonder if the word “cancelation” is spelled with one or two L’s. You certainly don’t want to sound uneducated while fighting the man, do you? :roll:

Note: These steps assume you are using Firefox, and have Google set as the default search engine. Also note that these steps are designed to keep your hands on the keyboard. If you reach for the mouse, you are slowing down the procedure! Emacs, anyone? ;)

1. Copy the word in question to the clipboard. Shift+Arrow Keys will start a selection. Ctrl+C will copy the selection to the clipboard.
2. Press Ctrl+T to open a new tab.
3. Press Ctrl+K to move the keyboard input to the Firefox Web Search box, which is located to the right of the Go button.
4. Press Ctrl+V to paste the word into the Web Search box. Press enter.
5. Google’s opinion of the word will be shown:
* If the word is hyperlinked to answers.com (top-right corner, where Google says “Results 1 - N), then it is spelled correctly.
* If a new word is suggested, under the Google search box, then it is probably misspelled and the suggested word is probably what you really meant. Copy the corrected spelling to the clipboard.
6. Press Ctrl+W to close the tab. Paste the word, if necessary, and continue about your business.

I understand this looks like a lengthy operation, but with some practice, you can be back in the forum with the correct spelling in under 5 seconds. Opening a dictionary program, or even navigating to a dictionary website, would take much longer.

There are two ways to remove the My Bluetooth Places desktop icon. The first method only affects the current user, while the second method is a system-wide change that affects all users.


Option 1 (per-user)

This method only hides the My Bluetooth Places icon from the current user’s desktop, e.g., the user logged in when the changes are made.

How to use Tweak UI

1. Login as the user that needs to have the My Bluetooth Places desktop icon hidden.
2. Run Tweak UI.
3. Navigate to Desktop. Note: This step refers to Tweak UI, not Windows.
4. You should see a list of desktop icons on the right side. Uncheck My Bluetooth Places.
5. Click OK or Apply to see the icon disappear from the current user’s desktop.



If you did everything correctly, the My Bluetooth Places desktop icon will no longer be visible on the current user’s desktop.
